Trio of family members flee home after hurricane makes landfall
The morning Hurricane Harvey would landfall in the coastal bend, Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, Baytree property manager Deborah Sweatman secured the resort condominium complex, hooked her boat up to her truck thinking it would be her transportation back to the island, loaded her camera equipment, iPad and a bag of personal items and headed to her mother Jacqueline Hopkins’ house in Aransas Pass.
Jacqueline lives on FM 1069 between Aransas Pass and Rockport, in an old farm house that has withstood many hurricanes over the past 100 years. Jacqueline, at 84 years old, and Deborah’s son Jason Knight, 40, thought they would ride out Harvey, and thought they had everything they needed: plenty of dry goods, water, batteries, flashlights, and a battery-operated radio, so 63-year-old Deborah stayed with them.
