Third hearing set about annexation, speakers invited
After meeting in closed session for about 1.5 hours, the Aransas Pass City Council took action to approve scheduling a third public hearing in regard to annexation, entering into a development agreement, and denying a request for annexation. The closed session was held during the Council’s regular term meeting Monday, June 3, 2019.
The council approved scheduling a third public hearing regarding the Phase II annexation area, although a third hearing is not required. The city received several petitions and requests for a public hearing to be held in the Phase II annexation area which includes 1,400 acres of property located north of Aransas Pass and extending to the City of Rockport’s extraterritorial jurisdiction and along Highway 35 Bypass and Highway 35 Business.
It was determined there is no location in the proposed area to hold such a hearing, therefore the council approved holding one at the Aransas Pass Civic Center on Monday, June 17, 2019 at 6 p.m.
That area includes Rockport Terminals, LLC formerly the Degussa Plant. It was later announced by Council member Carrie Scruggs, the City invited representatives from Rockport Terminals to give a formal presentation about their proposed property use, plans, and the creation of a special district.
According to City Manager Gary Edwards, the invitation was extended, but the city, as of press deadline, had not been notified if anyone from Rockport Terminals would be attending.
