Texas A&M AgriLife Extension of Aransas County is hosting a 4-H Membership Drive and Ice Cream Social Thursday, Aug. 24, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Extension office, 892 Airport Rd., Rockport.

Texas 4-H, a program of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, has been going strong for more than 100 years; involving youth in activities that help develop skills for a lifetime. It provides opportunities for youth to participate in community 4-H clubs, handson learning experiences, community service, leadership, day and overnight camps, and other special interest events. 4-H also provides opportunities for families and communities to develop stronger bonds.

Kids from third grade to 12th grade can pursue their interests at minimal cost by taking part in as many 4-H projects as they would like. Some of them available in Aransas county are Archery, Clothing and Textiles, Consumer Decision Making, Food & Nutrition, Gardening, Kayaking, Livestock (raising and showing cattle, hogs, goats, lambs, rabbits, turkeys and chickens), Photography, Public Speaking, Shooting Sports, and Sport Fishing. Members can participate in the San Patricio and Aransas A&H (Agriculture and Homemaking) Show and in major shows.

The annual membership fee is $20 if enrolled by Oct. 31, or $25 if enrolled after that date. Limited scholarships are available. The new 4-H year begins Sept. 1.
