Community to Hold Benefit for Former APPD Sergeant

After 25 years in law enforcement in Aransas Pass, Sergeant Dennis Anders was forced to retire due to medical reasons. But the local communities will band together once again to host a benefit to help Sgt. Anders with medical expenses.

Each year, Sgt. Anders organized the Tots Car Show to help needy children and families in the local area during the holiday seasons. Gypsy Leckbee with the Aransas Pass Moose Lodge explained herself and a couple of others decided to host the benefit after talking with the Aransas Pass Police Department. “[Sgt. Anders] has done so much for this community,” Leckbee said. “It’s time for us to help him out in this time of need, return the favor and show how much his efforts are appreciated.”

The benefit will be held on Oct. 8 at the Ingleside VFW. A chicken leg quarters cook-off will take place at 9 a.m. Different first responders throughout the community will have teams competing in the cook-off. Anyone is encouraged to have a team in the cook-off. Chicken leg quarter and sausage plates with beans and potato salad will be sold for $8 each beginning at 11 a.m. A silent auction will be take place at noon with a couple of bigger auction/raffle items being a three-day stay at Mustang Towers and raffle scope from Aransas firearms. Leckbee explained the organizers have already received numerous auction items from the community, and will continuing accepting items. “We do this from the bottom of our hearts,” Leckbee said. “Anything will help, and we can’t thank the community enough for all the help.”

T-shirts are also on sale for $20 each at Fowler Lumber. If one makes a donation to benefit, he or she will get his or her name on the shirt.

APPD will have a team in the cook-off. “[The police department] has been a part of this entire process,” Assistant Chief David Perkins said. “We’ll be there to assist the organizers and to show our support for Sgt. Anders.”
