PRESS RELEASE

Aransas Pass Fire Department Conducts annual fire Hydrant Testing and Maintenance

Aransas Pass, Texas – June 9, 2016

Fire Chief William Cox announces the Aransas Pass Fire Department will be conducting annual fire hydrant testing and maintenance starting May 31. This program is very important to allow the City to identify the quantity of water available for firefighting purposes and it serves to rid the City’s water distribution system of accumulations of sedimentation deposits over the past year.

The fire hydrant testing and maintenance includes capturing flow readings, flushing of the fire hydrant and line, cleaning, and documenting any inefficiency found. The maintenance program is performed by the on-duty Aransas Pass Fire Department personnel.

Citizens who experience any unusual water clarity problems after the hydrants are flushed are encouraged to turn on a cold-water faucet outside of the house and allow it to run for 5 to 10 minutes. This will normally clear up the agitated water from the service line to the home. Sediment can accumulate in the lines which can cause discoloration in laundry. It is recommended to check that both the hot and cold laundry water is clear before washing. A slight decline in water quality is common immediately after fire hydrant testing has occurred. If water quality does not improve or further problems occur, contact the Aransas Pass Public Works Department by calling (361) 758-5301

Most testing is expected to take place Monday thru Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. with occasional work being done on the weekends. The testing will be completed by July 31, 2016.
