Mosquito ‘dunks’, or ‘briquettes’ as they are called like the ones shown here by Aransas Pass DPW Street Maintenance Superintendent Michael ‘Mickey’ Bonner can be used in either small places where water collects, like flower planters, or larger spaces like ditches to kill adult mosquitoes. Both are available at the DPW office on Ave. A at no cost to homeowners with proof of residency. They are just some of the tools the Harbor City is using to combat the flying insects that like to feed by sucking the blood of victims, mostly at night.

Aransas Pass also uses trucks equipped with mobile sprayers to treat areas of the city’s 52.4 square miles reachable by roads. It’s not an easy task when mosquitoes need water to breed and much of the seaside community – 75 percent, said Bonner – is made up of water. Thursday, May 18, one of the DPW trucks was spraying in an area near City Hall.
