Thomas was a Scoutmaster before the Aransas Pass Boy Scout Troop disbanded. A U.S. flag that flew outside the long since shuttered Aransas Pass Boy Scout Center on Wilson Ave. was presented to U.S. Army medic Michael Ortiz who proudly displayed it in the field while serving during the war in Afghanistan. When he came home, Ortiz returned the red, white, and blue to Thomas as an expression of thanks for the Boy Scouts support of the troops and it is now preserved in a wood and glass case inside the Slowride office.
