This vintage U.S. military surplus vehicle is joining the Aransas Pass Fire Department apparatus and will be converted to serve as a new brush truck, designated for calls involving wildfires. The department got it for the bargain price of $6,500 through a Texas state program for redistribution of government surplus, this set of wheels brought back from San Antonio. Chief Nathan Kelley said his staff would handle the project in house to prepare it for service, expecting the job to take up to six weeks to complete. The old brush truck they’re using now will then be converted, too, destined for use as a high-water evacuation vehicle, handy especially following a tidal surge that may be caused by a hurricane.
