Knox Box coming to AP businesses
Knox Boxes have been in the International Fire Code since 2000, and the code was adopted into the City of Aransas Pass fire ordinances in September 2016, however, having businesses come into compliance with the ordinance are now taking place with more regularity.
The issue came to the forefront recently when a new business in the city was applying for its certificate of occupancy and was notified by Aransas Pass Fire Department officials, a Knox Box is needed. The new business owner had never heard of the ordinance or a Knox Box.
A Knox Box is a special key box mounted outside of businesses, and sometimes residential homes, and which contains a key to the building. This is something similar to what a realtor may use but is much more secure. The box is made of heavy thick steel, and also can be installed with a switch inside to activate a security alarm. This key box is used by the fire department to make rapid entry into a building during exigent circumstances.
