Hurricane can’t stop coffee ‘Addiction’

When Tammie Brown opened the Addiction the day before Christmas last year, she began her business under the city’s new Planning and Zoning rules and was not happy about all the new requirements, restrictions, etc. Now that her building withstood Hurricane Harvey, it’s a different story.

Brown was only halfjoking about that. After Harvey blew through Friday, Aug. 25, she was open the next day providing free hot coffee and water to those who needed it. She said her building did sustain some minimal damage, but for the most part, it held up.

She was able to get up and running thanks to the generator, and began giving away the water and coffee Saturday, Aug. 26. She also opened up a “limited” menu, explaining, “We have no espresso machine and no blenders.”

When asked why she opened up as soon as she could, Brown said simply, “We’re doing it to help people who have not had coffee, to help eliminate headaches, and to bring some normalcy back to the community.”

She recalled everything she had to go through to get the building complete, noting planning and zoning officials were “really me on me about it.” She followed through and complied and is now truly grateful stating, “We sustained minimal damage. We lucked out thanks to planning and zoning and their new rules.”

She added, “As of Sept. 1, we just got in with new laws, and I wasn’t happy, but now I want to kiss them all.”

The Addiction is a drivethrough/walk-up coffee shop serving Doma coffee, energy drinks, fraps, some snacks and also features a kids menu. For now, they are open from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. temporarily with a limited menu.

Last week, she was having issues getting gas for the generator, as well as ice much like the rest of the community. However, they do have cold brew for iced coffees and her telephone service is back.

And all else aside, that is what it is all about, providing a service to her community. After all, not even Hurricane Harvey can stop a “coffee Addiction.”
