Fowler Lumber stayed open late day hurricane hit

Fowler Lumber Company has been in business since 1952, and is now under the ownership of Zane Whitney, who kept the doors open until 3 p.m. on Aug. 25, the day Hurricane Harvey hit land. In spite of water up to one’s waist, three feet of water in the main building, and a lot of damage, Whitney and his staff opened the store Sunday, Aug. 27, and began waiting on customers. They were open extended hours and seven days a week, especially for customers on generators, even though water was still all around the building.

Whitney is the nephew to Don and Esther Fowler who opened the business. He grew up in the lumber yard and when he heard the news about Harvey’s path, he started thinking about the customers and knew he had to stay open as long as possible before the storm hit.
