Texas House Readies For New Speaker

Following the November 3, 2020 election, The Texas House of Representatives is poised for leadership and membership changes ahead of the 2021 Legislative Session. Of the 150 members, 14 decided not to run for re-election and a few others lost either a primary or general election race. However, it appears that the Texas House of Representatives will convene in January with 83 Republicans and 67 Democrats. This is the same balance of power from previous sessions, despite nearly $30 million spent from out-of-state interest groups trying to flip Republican seats to the Democrats. That effort was unsuccessful. Yet, the Texas Senate flipped one seat from Republican to Democrat, making the balance of power in that chamber 18 Republicans and 13 Democrats.
