Carlton James “Nook” Salge

Carlton James “Nook” Salge of Aransas Pass, Texas, passed away on July 17, 2016. He was 89-years-old. He was born February 20, 1927 in Karnes City, Texas to Robert William and Effie Peral Salge. He was a World War II veteran after serving in Japan for three years in the army. Most of his working life was spent in the oil-fields of Texas and Louisiana. He started out as a roughneck for Joe Payne and advanced up the corporate ladder as company superintendent with Maragorda Drilling Company in Corpus Christi. He owned and operated his own business, Nook’s Used Auto Parts, a salvage yard and wrecker service, in Aransas Pass, for almost 30 years. Because of his desire to always help others, he probably gave away as many parts as he sold. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and owning and flying his own airplane. He always enjoyed family and friends, and he was blessed with many. His smile and laughter were contagious. He was a big sports fan. Known as “The Texas Tornado” in the army, he pitched his way to his league championship. He also enjoyed football and was a big Dallas Cowboys fan. Sundays were spent watching the Cowboys on TV and coaching from the couch. Very seldom was he seen without his Dallas Cowboys hat which went to Heaven with him. He was an avid race car fan with a love for stock car racing. He held the Corpus Christi Speedway track record for the fastest time, most races won and crowd favorite. His black and white, 1956 Chevy #66, was absolutely the crowd pleaser. He was a loving and giving man, never meeting a stranger. He will be missed by many. We now all have a guardian angel. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Alice M. (Upton) Salge; son, C.L. “Butch” Salge (Linda) of Aransas Pass, Texas; daughter, Shirley Jo Salge-Mullenax (Jeff) of Aransas Pass, Texas; sister, Gwendolyn “Chico” Rigby (Jerry) of St. Petersburg, Florida; 4 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Services were held July 20, 2016, at 2 p.m. at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home Chapel in Aransas Pass. His daughter conducted the service per his wishes. Juanita Reyes sang two songs during the service. Pallbearers were Jerru Rigby, Jeffrey Mullenax, Johnny Mullenax, Jimmy Salge, Blake Noah and George Noah.
