Butler family tradition continues at state track meet
A change in stance, technique, and warmup music made a big difference in getting Aransas Pass High School shot putter Matt Butler from fourth place in district to winning gold at the Region IV-4A track meet, and advancing to Austin with the best throw in the state. With that effort, the young man is also keeping up a “family tradition” of going to the state meet – started by his father Robert and continued by his brother William.
The elder Butler competed in the long jump in high school, and as a senior in 1982 advanced to the state meet with the best distance in the region. He was given the bad news his father died the night before he was to compete. Robert was only able to take one jump, but ended up placing fifth. His son William competed in long jump in 2013, also when he was a senior, and finished ninth.
