Aransas Pass Falls Short in Season Opener
The Aransas Pass High School football team lost the season opener to Rockport-Fulton 18-13 on Aug. 26 at Bo Bonorden Memorial Stadium.
The Pirates got on the board first with a two-yard touchdown run with 10:12 remaining in the first quarter. Panthers stopped the two point coversion. Panthers couldn't get anything going in the two first quarter possessions. Rockport would take the 6-0 lead into the second quarter.
Aransas Pass had a big second quarter. With 9:19 remaining in the second, the Panthers intercepted a pass at the 50-yard-line. Tim Weekley busted open for a 44-yard touchdown run a couple of plays later. The extra point was good for the Panthers, and AP took the lead 7-6 with 7:54 remaining in the half. On the Rockport possession, the Panthers recovered a fumble at the 20-yard-line, and would capitailze on the turnover when Weekley reached for the endzone. Extra point was no good giving the Panthers the 13-6 lead which would stand going into halftime.
Aransas Pass couldn't get anything going in the second half. The Pirates would march down the field and score from the one-yard-line with 6:13 remaining in the third quarter with a 13-12 score. Aransas Pass fumbles the next kickoff, and Rockport recovers. The Pirates would capitalize on the turnover with a four-yard touchdown run which would prove to be the game winner.
The Panthers got a drive going when they received the ball back with just over a minute to play. But Rockport would recover a fumble with 35 seconds remaining in the game. The Pirates took a knee to end the game.
