APHS Choir Places in State

The Aransas Pass High School Choir team went to state and brought home more medals than any of the sports teams combined. Kalie Simpson scored a III rating for a Bronze, Shaylea Huffman scored a II for Silver and Senior Ryan Padilla and Freshman Madi Lee earned I ratings for Gold.

“These students showed so much self-discipline on this overnight trip,” Aransas Pass ISD Choir Teacher Gabe Perez said. “They were rehearsing on their own in their hotel rooms as that was what I heard as I walked through the halls of the hotel. I could not ask for any better students. My whole entire 300 plus students are my dream come true. I want to thank them for making this the best year of my entire 19 years of teaching.”

Perez was also involved with the One Act Play team that reached the Regional level of competition. Also, he is quite the comedian as he hosted an earlier in the school year jovial theatrical performance. Lee will be a sophomore next school year and can be heard singing in the hallways throughout the school all through the day.

“Going to State is pretty nerve wracking,” Huffman said. “Nobody sees you like in sports, and then you are on stage, and that is what makes it nerve wracking. I want to get back to State and that means I have to practice more singing. I am a soprano, and Madi is also a soprano and I will work with her to make me a better singer.”

Huffman’s mother raved about her daughter’s accomplishments. “I am emphatically proud,” Roby Huffman said. “Let me just say, I am one happy mother.”

One would expect more singing medals for Aransas Pass High School over the next three years considering the young talent returning, but according to Perez, it takes about six years to develop a program. With more than 30 students in the AC Blunt Choir next school year, it may seem like the Fine Arts Department has finally arrived in Aransas Pass.

“The 30 students in AC Blunt [choir] are more than the number of students I had at the high school this past year,” Perez said.
