APHS alumnus publishes adult coloring book
Aransas Pass High School Class of 1995 graduate Jason Followell’s abstract coloring book hit the Amazon store on Dec. 22. Color It Yours: Abstract Coloring Book Volume 1 features 48 abstract images drawn by Followell.
Followell shared he has always liked to draw. “I took an art class with Mr. Rivera when I was in school [in Aransas Pass] which is when I really started to take to drawing,” Followell said.
Followell used to draw things on canvases for his wife, Caitlyn, to paint. Jason’s mother gifted Caitlyn with a coloring book for Christmas in 2015 which became the inspiration for the Followell’s to publish a coloring book. “After receiving that coloring book, we thought why not make our own coloring book,” Caitlyn said. “We had never seen an abstract book so decided to go in that direction.”
Caitlyn explained she would hang her paintings that Jason drew around her shop in Rockport. People always asked to buy the canvases, so the Followell’s were confident people would be interested in the coloring book.
Caitlyn edited each of Jason’s drawings to make sure the lines connected correctly, and there were no random marks on the pages. She put each page into a word document, and sent to a company who printed the book. The Followell’s said they proofed three different books before the copy was completed. The company the Followell’s printed the coloring book with work directly with Amazon, and once the final approval was completed, Color It Yours was for sale on Amazon.
As of Jan. 2, several books have been purchased through Amazon with eight customer reviews all giving Color It Yours five stars.
Jason shared he already has enough drawings for a Volume 2 abstract coloring book. Jason is also working on a coloring book of henna drawings. Jason and Caitlyn attended the Ingleside Renaissance Faire recently, and Caitlyn got a henna tattoo. Jason decided a coloring book with henna drawings would make a “cool book.”
The Followell’s are also hoping to scan the canvases to make a coloring book.

Jason is hoping people will share photos of completed coloring pages, so he can see what people see in his drawings. “I enjoy drawing. It’s a stress reliever and hobby for me,” Jason said. “I wanted to share my drawings with everyone else so maybe they find joy in them too.”
