$1,000 fine set for tampering with AP city utility system
Individuals who tamper with the utility system in the City of Aransas Pass now face a fine of $1,000, as opposed to $100, effective the day action was taken by the City Council which was at a regular term meeting Monday, Dec. 3. Due to Monday press deadlines before the council meeting, action taken is not able to be published the Wednesday after the meeting, but is published the Wednesday a week after the meeting.
City Public Works Director Fernando Quintanilla presented the recommendation to amend the ordinance to increase the tampering fee to $750 per offense from the current $100. He also said it updates and clarifies wording, as it currently relates only to meter readers, but will not include all city utilities, sewer, etc.
Quintanilla explained the current ordinance specifies meter readers, but the change in wording will include all city utilities, noting they have had problems with individuals messing with hydrants and meters, as well as tapping into the sewer and water lines illegally.
