‘Memorial Day’ event held on Flag Day
Although one day a year, Memorial Day, is designated to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of this nation; families of fallen servicemen and women as well as veterans will note memorial day is every day for those who have lost a loved one. In keeping with that train of thought, members of the Aransas Pass VFW- John Wieble Post 2932 gathered for a Memorial Day tribute Wednesday, June 14, appropriately enough on Flag Day. The event had originally been scheduled for Memorial Day on May 29, but was postponed due to weather.
VFW members gathered to salute the flag before a sparse crowd in attendance. Past VFW Commander Rene Longoria, retired Navy, served as guest speaker. His speech in its entirety is as follows:
“We are here to pay tribute to the men and women of our community who have served in the United States Armed Forces, our neighbors who fought in defense of this country and for preservation of our way of life. Those men and women are worthy of far greater recognition then mere words or markers. The sacrifices they made and the deeds they performed shall be written in history, and shall remain alive in our memories for generations to come. We express sincerely our price and gratitude for the tasks they fulfilled.
