Even though small in numbers, a contingent of Mustangs traveled to Austin last weekend to participate in the 2012 UIL State Track and Field Meet. Their results were impressive.
The boy’s mile relay team of Skylar Shugart, Ruben Adame, Terrance Robinson and David McHugh placed third overall in Class AAA after going in seeded eighth of the nine teams making it to state.
The quartet ran to a new school record of 3:19.25. Two of the four runners, Shugart and Robinson will return next year to try and better the times.
Robinson, just a sophomore, not only anchored the relay team, but he also ran a 48.42 in the 400 meters to finish fifth in the state in Class AAA, breaking his own school record in the process.
Coach Roberto Gonzales said, “What was most exciting for me as their coach was how they competed in the race. They have believed all year long and good things come to those who work hard.”
Two lady Mustangs, Malika McPheters and Madelon Thompson also made the trip to Austin.
McPheters ran well, placing seventh overall in the 400 meters with a time of 59.05. That was just .04 seconds off the school record.
Thompson, who qualified for state in the 100 meter by being the fastest third place finisher among all four state regional qualifying meets, ran a 12.51 to place ninth. Only a freshman, Thompson ran a personal best time and has three more attempts to go for the state title.
