Steve Jobs said, “Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious after awhile.” Connecting the dots is one of the major talents creative folks have. They can just see straight to the heart of matter, how to get around roadblocks, and how to fit the pieces together a bit better than before.
I think everyone has a creative side but many just bury it or hide it to avoid being different. Picasso said every child is an artist, but the problem is staying an artist when you grow up. I wonder at what point parents and teachers discourage our kids from expressing that innocent spark and how much we stifle their creative spirit early on? Obviously, we have to encourage a productive learning environment at school and at home but are we doing so in a way that curbs the natural enthusiasm for creativity young people have?
I think we go too far to program our kids to be quiet, follow the rules, and mind their manners “or else...” And once they’re in that limited mindset, it’s very difficult to overcome it. So your mission this week is to encourage yourself and at least one kid to rebel a bit, have some fun like you need to, and see if they might just be learning more than you think.
